He takes sort of a back seat, villain-wise and, over the books, discovers that he doesn’t have to be a villain there are other possibilities for him. What is it about Cardan that made you feel he should be the focus of this new volume? Still, many readers wanted to know what was going on with Cardan, so when I was talking with Little, Brown about things we could do after the trilogy, I thought it would be nice to do something special and illustrated. I ended up writing a story about Taryn, whose point of view we don’t often get to see. I always thought that it would be a Cardan novella, but, when I sat down to write it, I realized that there was no way to go about writing it without spoiling the reader’s sense of who he was at a time when he really needed to be more ambiguous. ![]() When I was planning the trilogy, I intended to write a novella. How did you come to return to this world for a new book? The collection is bookended with stories that take place after The Queen of Nothing. This collection starts in a period following the trilogy, but then it jumps back, so readers get a lot of backstory about Cardan, as well as his perspective before and during the trilogy. ![]() ![]() How does this new book fit into your Folk of the Air trilogy? ![]()

The characters, I'd have to say, are the strong point. Azuma obviously improves throughout the series, and cause the artwork to be a bit inconsistent (as you'll notice with Chiyo-chan's pigtails!). ![]() Kiyohiko does a better job with the art in Yotsuba&!, even though the art in Azumanga Daioh is also pretty well done. Since it mostly consists of four-panel strips, the art is not detailed, The humor is random and strange at times, but that makes it all the more funny.Īlthough I can't say I like the art as much in the first volume, the art in Azumanga Daioh is rendered well in most of it. It's plot is nothing heavy, certainly nothing dramatic or romantic, and sometimes it doesn't even make sense. ![]() I adore slice-of-life manga, which would be the genre that suits Azumanga Daioh best. It never quite slowed down so you could catch it, except by thinking back, and it left some people more important than others as it changed. She had come to the Greenway house two months before Emma was born, and it was all so strange, the way life went on and seemed the same even tough it was always changing. Seeing Emma sitting there, so trusting and goodhearted, such a happy-looking young woman, filled her with memory suddenly, until she felt too full. I bought this copy in April 2000 and read it in July of that year, along with “ All My Friends are Going to be Strangers” which I’d previously read in 1997 from the library I can only assume that as I bought them together, I realised the link and read them together which makes sense, although there’s more linkage between this one and “ Moving On“. The third of the Houston Series which forms the last section of my hugely enjoyable Larry McMurtry 2022 Re-reading Project, and I’m realising that you need to read the series as one whole work, weaving in and out of the time sequence, as this one takes us back to before Emma and Flap Horton have their two sons, then forward a decade and more. ![]() ![]() ![]() Rules Be KindĮvery interaction on the subreddit must be kind, respectful, and welcoming.
